Culinary Scholarships And College Grants For Aspiring Culinary Artists

Culinary Scholarships

Culinary scholarships are available to those who wish to have a career in the culinary arts. These days, getting a professional degree is not cheap. One needs to have the financial resources to be able to earn the right certification, particularly in the very competitive world of food service.

Culinary education can be very expensive. Even short courses can cost a lot and can take its toll on the pocket of the student. There are costs for tuition, books, cooking supplies and uniforms. Boarding expenses should also be in the list, particularly if the school is not somewhere near the student's home. Travel expenses, especially for students studying in foreign schools, are also part of the education costs. With all these financial burdens, it is not surprising that most aspiring chefs are often discouraged to pursue their chosen career.

However, for students who have the patience to research and apply for college scholarships and grants, pursuing a career in culinary arts might not be as difficult as it should be. A number of schools, organizations and agencies do offer student aid and some of them are highlighted below.

One of the major scholarship programs offered to culinary arts students comes from the Culinary Trust. The trust offers grants to individuals planning to pursue a formal culinary education. Student aid for independent studies and research works is also available under the Culinary Trust.

Another institution that offers such aid is the American Academy of Chefs' American Culinary Federation Foundation. These programs are offered to high school students who plan on earning a culinary arts degree; student culinary teams who compete in regional and national competitions; and even professional chefs who are already working in the industry.

The National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation is also keen on awarding scholarships to students who wish to have a career in food service or culinary arts. The program starts at $2,000. The National Italian American Foundation also offers scholarships to students based on academic merit. The grants are provided to two groups of students.

Scholarships for culinary arts education cater to almost every branch of the discipline. Students hoping to specialize in vegetarian cooking, pastry-making and other branches can find some form of help to finance their education. Most of these institutions favor students who have good academic standings and individuals who participate or volunteer in activities designed to help the less fortunate members of the general public.

When looking for culinary scholarships, an applicant should take note of the requirements posted by the providers. Submitting complete documents and submitting them early can also help improve a student's chances of winning college grants.
